About
Serbek Technologies LLC is a freelance software engineering practice led by a principal with over 30 years of production experience — spanning state government, education, finance, and independent consumer products.
Background
BS from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. A career of leadership and hands-on engineering roles across diverse industries, shipping software that has served agencies, enterprises, and end users for decades.
Over a decade as Director of Information Technology at the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM), a California state agency funding stem cell research — leading all software development and infrastructure through two major platform generations — and now its Lead Architect for the Grants Management System in an ongoing half-time role. Earlier senior engineering leadership at Kaplan, Scholastic, and PEAK6.
Approach
Pragmatic, full-stack, end-to-end. Equally comfortable at the whiteboard, in production code, at the terminal configuring infrastructure, and mentoring teams. Recent work reflects a commitment to shipping with current tools rather than yesterday's: a portfolio of two dozen production applications — multiplayer games, photo and trading platforms, language interpreters, knowledge bases — built in Rust alongside Claude Code and running on a self-managed Kubernetes cluster. The portfolio shares a single sign-on identity platform (OIDC and SSH-key auth) and a library of internal crates, the kind of cross-cutting architecture that keeps many services consistent and maintainable.
